Sample № 04 — water heater research
Buying a water heater, the boring-but-right way.
A worked example. Copy the prompt, paste it into the AI tool you use, and follow what it asks back.
What the AI will produce
- Constraints list — fuel, vent, capacity, clearances, connection types.
- Code + permit triggers for your jurisdiction (flagged, not assumed).
- Sizing recommendation based on household size and usage.
- Warranty comparison framework.
- Installation requirements — who can install + required safety devices.
- Recall + class-action history flags for major brands.
- Comparison table of 2-3 options against your constraints.
- Questions for your plumber or product support.
Example interaction
The expensive question
“Heat pump water heater or like-for-like gas replacement?” Heat pump is 60-70% more efficient but needs ambient air space, a condensate drain, and 240V wiring. The AI walks through whether your install location supports it — and what permits change.
The compliance trap
Many jurisdictions now require an expansion tank, a pan and drain to an approved location, earthquake straps (in seismic zones), and a sediment trap on gas lines. A “cheap install” that skips these doesn’t pass inspection and may void warranty.
